Sacré-Cœur de Balata
A scaled-down version of the Paris basilica standing in the hills above Fort-de-France.

The church at Balata, built between 1923 and 1925, is a reduced copy of the Sacré-Cœur basilica in Montmartre, set on a hillside above Fort-de-France with the bay laid out below and the Pitons du Carbet behind. It was raised as a memorial to Martinicans who died in the First World War. The scale is roughly a fifth of the original and the white domes read oddly and memorably against the rainforest around them.

Year round; mornings are clearest for the view down to the bay. Cloud builds in the afternoon. The church keeps daytime hours.
Things to know
The interior is plain and half an hour covers the visit. Parking on the roadside is tight and the road is busy. Cloud often hides the view entirely.
