The Caravelle Peninsula

The Caravelle pokes twelve kilometres into the Atlantic and concentrates wild Martinique onto its finger: a nature reserve where marked trails loop dry forest, cliff edges and mangrove boardwalks with the ocean detonating on the rocks below, a working lighthouse at the summit view, and at the tip the romantic ruins of Chateau Dubuc - an 18th-century estate whose history mixes sugar wealth with smuggling legends and the plantation system's dark ledger, told at the small site museum. Tartane village adds the living layer: Martinique's most authentic fishing harbour and its most consistent surf, sharing the same bay.

When to go

December to May is dry and breezy - ideal for the exposed trails; start early, as the loops are shadeless in stretches. Surf runs best with winter swell; the harbour works year round.

What to expect

The long loop is a genuine three-to-four-hour hike with rough footing and no water points - carry accordingly; the short loop suits families. Dubuc's history includes enslavement - the site addresses it, and visits should hold that weight. Atlantic swimming here is for surfers and the cautious; the calm side is Tartane's bay.
