EntryFree

Pointe Faula at Le Vauclin runs out into a shoal of white sand where the water stays around waist deep for hundreds of metres, warm and clear, protected by the reef offshore, and people simply stand in it. The trade wind blows steadily across the flats, which has made the point one of the main kitesurfing and windsurfing spots on the island. A beach and picnic area sit at the landward end.

What you actually see

  • The shallow shoal - waist-deep clear water hundreds of metres out.
  • The white sand bottom - pale sand that gives the water its colour.
  • The kitesurfing - the steady trade wind used across the flats.
  • The reef protection - the barrier keeping the Atlantic swell off.

When to go

December to April has the steadiest wind and the driest weather. Weekends are busy with local families and kiters. The flats work at most states of tide.

Honest expectations

The wind is constant and makes sunbathing uncomfortable. Kite lines and swimmers share the water and it can be hazardous. Facilities are basic and parking fills at weekends.

Nearby

Montagne du Vauclin is inland, and Cap Chevalier is south.
