Bukit Jugra rises about a hundred and twenty metres over the flat coastal land at the mouth of the Langat river, which is enough in country this flat to make it a landmark and to give it the two things it is known for. The first is paragliding: the summit has a launch site with reliable sea-breeze conditions and is the main flying hill for the Klang Valley, with tandem flights sold to visitors and a landing field below. The second is history - Jugra was the royal seat of Selangor in the late nineteenth century before the capital moved, and at the foot are the Sultan Abdul Samad mosque, the royal mausoleum and the remains of the istana, along with a colonial-era lighthouse on the hill and an old prison. There is also a firefly area on the Langat river nearby.

What you actually see

  • A paragliding launch - the main flying hill for the Klang Valley.
  • A lighthouse on the summit - the colonial-era light above the river mouth.
  • A former royal seat - mosque, mausoleum and istana remains at the foot.
  • A view over the Langat mouth - flat coast and river in every direction.

When to go

All year; midday to afternoon for flying conditions. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Flying depends entirely on wind and is cancelled often - book flexibly. The road up is narrow. The historic buildings below are modest and some are closed. Little shade at the top.

Nearby

Banting and Morib beach are close; Carey Island is north.
