Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor

Sasaran, marketed as the Sky Mirror, is a sandbank a few kilometres off the Selangor coast that is submerged most of the time and emerges for a couple of hours around the lowest tides, two or three days either side of new and full moon. When it does, it comes up as a flat plate of sand under a millimetre or two of standing water, and with no wind that film reflects the sky completely, which is the effect - the same principle as the salt flats at Uyuni, on a much smaller scale and for a much shorter window. Trips run from Jeram or Kuala Selangor by boat, timed to the tide, and the operators bring props and photograph groups, which is the format. Outside the tidal window there is nothing there at all, so booking follows the lunar calendar.

What you actually see

• A sandbank that surfaces - emerging only around the lowest spring tides.
• A mirror film of water - a millimetre or two reflecting the sky when it is still.
• Boat access timed to tide - half an hour out from Jeram or Kuala Selangor.
• Shellfish and starfish - the life exposed on the flat while it is up.

When to go

Two or three days either side of new and full moon only. Half a day.

Honest expectations

It exists only in a short tidal window - dates are fixed by the moon, not by convenience. Wind ruins the reflection entirely. Trips are heavily photo-oriented and can feel staged. Sun on the flat is brutal.
