i-City Shah Alam

i-City began as a technology park development in Shah Alam and acquired its identity almost by accident: the developer lit the landscaping with LEDs - artificial trees, flowers, deer, peacocks and arches, tens of millions of diodes - and the result drew crowds who came simply to walk among the lights at night, which turned the site into a leisure destination. What has grown around that is a cluster of paid attractions: a water park, a snow house kept below freezing, a trick-art museum, a wax museum, a small zoo, a Ferris wheel and a shopping mall. It is entirely artificial and makes no claim otherwise. The lights are the free-to-walk part and are best after about eight; the attractions each charge and are aimed squarely at families and teenagers.

What you actually see

• LED-lit artificial landscape - glowing trees, flowers and animals through the grounds.
• A snow house - a refrigerated room with fake snow, a novelty in the tropics.
• A water park and small zoo - the paid attractions around the light park.
• A Ferris wheel and mall - the rest of the leisure complex.

When to go

All year; after eight in the evening for the lights. An evening.

Honest expectations

Everything beyond walking among the lights costs extra and adds up quickly. It is crowded at weekends and on holidays. The attractions are small and quickly done. Rain clears the park.
