At the tip of the Nankumba Peninsula, Cape Maclear's long golden crescent fronts the protected waters of Lake Malawi National Park - the world's first freshwater park of its kind, inscribed by UNESCO for an evolutionary spectacle: hundreds of cichlid species, many found nowhere else, flickering in Crayola shoals over the boulder gardens. Chembe village runs the beach with its fishing routine and barefoot lodges, kayaks and dhows cross to Thumbi and the baobab islands, and snorkelling off Otter Point puts visitors inside the aquarium. Fish eagles call the hours; sunsets perform over the water nightly.

The cichlid snorkel - Otter Point's shoals of endemic colour.
Thumbi Island - the kayak-and-snorkel crossing from the beach.
Fish eagles - the lake's white-headed emblem, calling and diving.
Chembe village life - nets, mandasi stalls and beach football.

When to go

May to October is dry, clear and mosquito-lighter; September and October bring the warmest swimming. The wet season greens the hills and empties the lodges - atmospheric if you accept storms.

Honest expectations

Bilharzia exists in Lake Malawi - risk varies by spot and season; many travellers swim regardless and treat afterwards, but know the issue and decide informed. Village beach life includes hustle for boat trips - agree prices clearly. Power and connectivity flicker; that is half the point.
