Mumbo lies about ten kilometres off Cape Maclear inside Lake Malawi National Park, an uninhabited granite island with forest on it and a single camp of tented rooms built on wooden platforms, run on solar with composting toilets and everything carried in and out. The rock drop-offs around it hold cichlids in numbers and the snorkelling is the best in the park. Fish eagles nest on the island and otters work the shore.

When to go
May to October is the dry season. The camp closes for part of the year. Booking well ahead is required.
Honest expectations
Access is for camp guests only and the camp is small and books out. It closes seasonally. Everything must be carried in and out and there are no shops or services.
