Triesen Old Village

Triesen's old village occupies the slope above the modern town, a quarter of timber and stone houses on narrow lanes with two medieval chapels in it: St Mamertus, dating in part to the eleventh century, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. It is the best preserved historic village fabric in Liechtenstein, which mostly rebuilt itself in the twentieth century. The Rhine valley is below. Triesen was one of the country's earliest industrial villages, with a cotton mill working from the nineteenth century.

What you actually see

• The lanes - the narrow streets of the upper quarter.

When to go

April to October is the pleasant season. The chapels are often locked outside services. Winter is cold but the quarter is walkable.

Honest expectations

The chapels are usually locked and access needs the keyholder. The quarter is small and an hour covers it. There is no visitor infrastructure.
