The Princely Wine and Vineyards

Few realise that the tiny principality of Liechtenstein is a wine producer, its sunny, sheltered slopes in the Rhine valley enjoying a favourable climate for viticulture that dates back to Roman times. The country's vineyards yield surprisingly good wines, above all elegant Pinot Noir and crisp whites, and the most famous producer is the Prince of Liechtenstein's own Hofkellerei, the princely wine cellars, one of the oldest and most prestigious estates. Visitors can stroll the vineyards on a scenic wine trail through and above Vaduz, and sample the local vintages at the princely cellars and other wineries, a delightful and little-known side of the micro-state.

Honest expectations

Liechtenstein's wine industry is tiny and its wines little-known internationally, so this is a niche, low-key pleasure rather than a famous wine region, and quantities are small and not cheap; tastings and cellar visits need arranging. As a surprising and delightful discovery, though, sampling good wine, including the reigning Prince's own vintages, amid scenic vineyards beneath the castle, it is a charming and unexpected highlight of a visit to the principality.
