Eschen

Eschen sits in Liechtenstein's northern lowland on the Rhine plain, one of the older parishes in the country with the Holy Cross chapel on the Rofenberg above it, a pilgrimage site with a fine timber ceiling, and the parish church of St Martin in the village. The Pfrundhaus, a former priest's house, holds a small museum. The Eschnerberg ridge rises just behind. Eschen and Nendeln form a single municipality, so the Roman villa is administratively part of the same place. The parish is one of the two oldest recorded in the country.

History

The name is thought to be Celtic, from esca, "by the waterside". Eschen was first recorded as Essane in 842, the name of Nendeln appears in the 14th century, and the first lower secondary school opened in Eschen in 1906 (Wikipedia, Eschen).

April to October is the pleasant season. The chapel and museum keep limited hours. Winter is cold and quiet.
