Historical Eschnerberg Trail

The historical Eschnerberg trail runs along the wooded ridge in Liechtenstein's north between Bendern and Schellenberg, around fifteen kilometres of marked path linking the two castle ruins, Bronze Age and Roman settlement sites, and the church hill at Bendern, with interpretation boards at each. The ridge stands above the Rhine valley and the walking is easy. It is the country's main historical walk. The ridge was settled long before the valley floor, which was marsh and flood ground until the Rhine was corrected.

What you actually see

• The castle ruins - the two Schellenberg sites on the ridge.
• The prehistoric sites - Bronze Age and Roman settlement ground along the route.
• Bendern church hill - the historic site at the western end.
• The ridge walking - easy going with the valley below.

When to go

April to October is the walking season. Autumn colour is good in October. Winter leaves the path icy in stretches.

Honest expectations

The archaeological sites are largely invisible on the ground and the interpretation boards do the work. It is a fifteen kilometre walk and takes half a day. Public transport at either end needs planning.
