Matsieng Royal Village

Matsieng has been the seat of the senior line of the Basotho royal family since the nineteenth century, when Letsie I, Moshoeshoe's son, settled there, and it remains the traditional home of the monarchy alongside the official residence in Maseru. The royal graves are on the site and the village functions as an ordinary Basotho settlement around them. Access to the palace grounds is restricted and photography needs care. The village sits on the plain below the sandstone hills, and the ground around it is farmed by the families who have lived there for generations.

When to go

September to April is the milder season. Access to parts of the site is restricted at all times. Ceremonial occasions close it entirely.

Honest expectations

The palace grounds are not open and photography of them is not permitted. There is little interpreted for visitors. Behaviour and dress expectations apply.
