Malealea and the Gates of Paradise Pass
A mountain village reached over a pass with an inscription promising paradise beyond.

The road to Malealea crosses a pass where a stone set beside it carries a line left by a trader in 1928: wayfarer, pause and look upon a gateway of paradise. Beyond it the country opens into a bowl of mountains and gorges with the village in the middle. A lodge there has run pony trekking into the surrounding valleys for decades, using Basotho ponies and local guides, with overnight stays in villages.

When to go
September to April is the milder season for trekking. Winter brings hard frost and snow at altitude. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms.
Before you go
The road in is gravel and rough in stretches. Pony trekking is genuinely uncomfortable for anyone unused to riding. Village accommodation on multi-day treks is basic.
