Letseng-la-Letsie

Letseng-la-Letsie is a shallow reservoir and the wetland around it at around two thousand three hundred metres in the southern Lesotho highlands, designated a Ramsar site for its bird life: it is one of the more significant waterbird sites in the country and the bald ibis and other highland species use the surrounding grassland. Herders bring cattle and sheep to the area and the high bogs feed the rivers below.

What you actually see

• The high wetland - bogs and shallow water at around two thousand three hundred metres.
• The waterbirds - the concentrations the Ramsar designation was made for.
• The bald ibis - one of the highland species using the surrounding ground.
• The grazing - the cattle and sheep brought up to the area by herders.

When to go

November to March is the summer season and the best for birds. Winter freezes the wetland and closes the tracks. Weather changes fast at altitude.

Honest expectations

The tracks in are rough and need four-wheel drive. There is no infrastructure of any kind. Overgrazing has damaged parts of the surrounding wetland.
