Kalnciema Quarter

Kalnciema Quarter is a lovingly restored group of 19th-century wooden houses on the left bank of the Daugava, turned into a small cultural hub. Its Saturday market of Latvian farmers, bakers and craftspeople is one of the nicest weekend rituals in Riga, more village than city.

Away from Saturday and event days it is a small, quiet block rather than a bustling attraction, so time your visit for the market. It is across the river, a short ride from the centre rather than walkable from the old town for most. It is charming but compact, an hour or two rather than a half day.

The wooden district of Pardaugava spreads around it; the old town is a tram ride back across the river.
