Saaz is a low-bitterness aroma hop, and the reason a good pilsner smells the way it does; it has been grown on the warm slopes around Zatec for centuries and traded through the town. North of the square stands a dense quarter built entirely for the crop: nineteenth-century warehouses several floors high, drying kilns with tall chimneys, sulphur houses and packing halls, laid out so that hops moved from cart to store to press without leaving the block. Some now hold a hop museum. Outside town the fields are strung with wire trellises that carry bines several metres high by late summer. The town and its hop landscape were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2023.

What you actually see

  • The warehouse quarter - tall brick hop stores, kilns and chimneys built as one working block.
  • The hop museum - presses, sorting tables and the trade's tools, in an old warehouse.
  • The trellis fields - wire frames carrying bines head-height and beyond by August.
  • The harvest traffic - trailers of green bines filling the roads in September.

When to go

Late August into September, when the harvest is running and the whole town smells of green hops; a harvest festival takes over the square in early September. The museum and quarter open year round with shorter winter hours. Outside the season the fields are bare wire and poles and there is much less to see.

Honest expectations

Zatec is a small, worn town and the listing has not yet changed it much: a few warehouses are restored, others stand empty behind boarded windows, and English information is thin outside the main museum. The beer-themed attractions feel slight for the ticket price. Once the museum is done there is little else, so pair it with the harvest or skip it.

Nearby

The Ohre river valley and the wooded Doupov hills to the west.
