Sary-Chelek Lake

Sary-Chelek fills a valley dammed by an ancient landslide, about seven kilometres long and over two hundred metres deep, held in steep slopes covered in the wild fruit and nut forest that makes this region botanically remarkable: walnut, apple, pistachio, plum and hawthorn growing wild, ancestral stock of orchard species. The reserve was established in 1959 and is a UNESCO biosphere reserve; the surrounding Western Tien-Shan is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Six smaller lakes lie in the same basin, and bears, lynx and marmots live in the forest. Access is through the village of Arkyt where the reserve office issues permits and homestays provide beds. Boats and swimming are restricted in places to protect the water, and walking is the main activity.

When to go

June to September for the roads and the walking; September brings the walnut harvest and autumn colour. Snow closes the approach roads in winter. Spring brings blossom but poor road conditions.

What to expect

Getting here is a long drive on mountain roads from any direction, six hours or more from Osh. Accommodation is homestays in Arkyt, simple and few. Permits must be bought at the reserve office. Swimming and boating are restricted. Trails are unmarked.
