Shah-Fazil Mausoleum

Shah-Fazil stands at Safid-Bulan in the Ferghana foothills, a square brick mausoleum with a high dome, built in the eleventh century and notable for what survives inside: walls and dome covered in carved and painted ganch plasterwork, geometric and floral, in a state of preservation that is unusual for the period and region. The building is part of a complex that includes a smaller mausoleum and a mosque, and the site is a live pilgrimage destination associated with early Islamic figures, so visitors share it with people who have come to pray. Local tradition links the place to a battle and to the women who buried the dead, which is retold at the site. Photography inside is restricted and shoes come off at the door.

When to go

April to October for comfortable travel; the Ferghana foothills are hot in midsummer. Fridays and religious holidays bring large numbers of pilgrims, which changes the atmosphere considerably.

What to expect

This is a functioning religious site first and a monument second: modest dress, removing shoes and asking before photographing are expected. Interpretation is minimal. The village is remote and the drive from Jalal-Abad is long on rough roads. There are no visitor facilities.
