Jalal-Abad

Jalal-Abad is the third city of Kyrgyzstan, sitting where the Ferghana valley meets the hills, and it has been known for its mineral and thermal springs for a very long time; local tradition connects them to the prophet Ayub, Job, and pilgrims came here before any sanatorium existed. The Soviet period built a large spa complex on the hill above town, which still operates, treating patients on courses of days or weeks with mineral baths and drinking cures. The town below is a working Ferghana city with a big bazaar, a mixed Kyrgyz and Uzbek population, and food that reflects it. There is little in the way of monuments, and most travellers pass through on the way to Arslanbob or Sary-Chelek rather than staying.

History

A branch of the Silk Road passed through the city, and legend says the waters of the Azreti-Ayup-Paygambar spring, named after the prophet Job, cured lepers, with a grave, a mosque and a khan's palace near the spa. In 2025 the city was officially renamed Manas (Wikipedia, Manas (city)).

• Ferghana food - the Uzbek-influenced cooking of the south.

When to go

April to October; the Ferghana valley is fiercely hot in July and August, when the hill above town is noticeably cooler. Spring and autumn are the best months.

What to expect

The sanatorium is Soviet-era in fabric and approach, and treatment is aimed at long courses rather than drop-in visitors. The city has few conventional sights. Summer heat is severe. It functions as a transit point and a base rather than a destination.
