Great Rann of Kutch

The Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh the size of a small country on the northern edge of Gujarat, flooded by seawater and monsoon runoff each summer and baked dry the rest of the year into a flat white crust that runs to the horizon. In winter it is possible to walk out onto the salt from the edge near Dhordo, where the ground is hard and cracked and there is no vegetation, no landmark and almost no sound. The surrounding grassland holds wild ass, desert fox, nilgai and flamingo colonies that breed on the mud when conditions allow. Villages nearby are known for embroidery, mirror work and mud-walled houses.

• Kutchi craft villages - embroidery, block printing and mirror work in the settlements south of the Rann.
• Wild ass and grassland birds - the dry-country wildlife, including flamingo when water remains.

When to go

November to February is the only sensible window: the flat is dry and firm and the days are mild. The season is built around the Rann Utsav tent city, which runs through winter and brings both crowds and higher prices. Full moon nights are the busiest and the most striking. From March the heat becomes extreme, and the monsoon floods the flat entirely.

Honest expectations

The Rann is one long empty view and some visitors find twenty minutes is enough. In peak season the access point near Dhordo is a busy fairground of stalls, camel carts and loudspeakers, which is not what most people picture. Accommodation is limited and overpriced during the festival, permits are checked at the road, and outside winter the place is either underwater or dangerously hot.

Bhuj, its craft workshops and the old walled bazaar sit a couple of hours south.
