Isla del Sol and Lake Titicaca

The Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world set on the altiplano at some 3,800 metres, holds one of the most sacred sites of the Andes: Isla del Sol, the Island of the Sun. In Inca mythology this tranquil island of terraced hills, ancient ruins, and traditional Aymara farming and fishing villages was the birthplace of the sun and of the first Incas. Reached by boat from the pilgrimage town of Copacabana, it offers serene walks, sweeping lake views and a deep sense of ancient spirituality.

When to go

May to October, the dry season, for the clearest weather and lake views; the high-altitude sun is intense by day and the nights cold, so bring layers and sun protection. Boats run from Copacabana, and an overnight on the island deepens the tranquil experience.

Honest expectations

At 3,800 metres the altitude is serious, so acclimatise before hiking the island's hilly trails, which are breathless work. Access to parts of the island has at times been restricted by disputes between the local communities, so check current conditions. Facilities are basic. The sacred significance, the tranquillity, the traditional villages and the views over the vast blue lake, though, are special.
