The salt pans at Jan Kok fed a plantation economy once; now they feed flamingos. A resident flock works the shallow pink-tinged flats beside the road to Sint Willibrordus, close enough for good binocular views and patient photography from the roadside and the small viewing spots - the birds commute between Curacao and Bonaire, so numbers swing from a handful to dozens with no schedule. The neighbouring landhuis, one of the island's oldest, overlooks the pans, and the roadside 'Williwood' sign nearby has become the local joke photo stop.

What you actually see

  • Feeding flamingos - the flock sweeping the shallows for brine shrimp.
  • The old salt pans - the plantation-era flats that hold the water.
  • Landhuis Jan Kok - the historic plantation house above the pans.
  • Sint Willibrordus village - the church-crowned village beyond.

When to go

Year round with no guarantee of numbers on a given day - early morning and late afternoon give the best light and activity. After rains the pans hold more water and often more birds. Passing on any west-coast beach day costs nothing.

Honest expectations

This is roadside wildlife viewing, not a managed reserve: no facilities, and the flock may be distant or absent - binoculars make the visit. Do not approach across the flats or use drones; disturbance moves the birds off. Ten minutes may satisfy non-birders; photographers can lose an hour happily.

Nearby

Porto Mari and Cas Abao beaches, Sint Willibrordus and Willemstad.
