Brezovica

Brezovica sits in the Sharr mountains on Kosovo's southern border, high enough that snow lies reliably from December into spring, and the resort has a reputation among Balkan skiers for its off-piste terrain and low prices. Developed in the Yugoslav era, it served as the designated backup venue for ski events at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, and the infrastructure has aged, but the mountain itself is good and lift queues are short. In summer the same slopes become walking country inside Sharri National Park, with alpine pasture, glacial lakes and shepherd huts, and the park protects some of the region's richest plant diversity.

When to go

Ski season runs roughly December to March, sometimes later at altitude. Summer hiking is best from June to September when the snow has cleared and the meadows flower. Spring and late autumn are muddy and quiet.

Honest expectations

The resort infrastructure is genuinely dated - old lifts, limited snowmaking and services that lag behind Alpine expectations. Redevelopment has been discussed for years without much happening. Off-piste is unpatrolled and avalanche risk is real without local knowledge. In summer, trails are lightly marked. Prices are very low, which is the compensation.
