The route is a piece of mountain infrastructure that became a destination. Between Toyama on the Sea of Japan side and Omachi in Nagano, a sequence of cable cars, buses and a ropeway lifts you over the Tateyama range without a single stretch of ordinary road, topping out at Murodo at about 2,450 metres. Murodo is a bare alpine plateau of volcanic ponds, snow patches and steam vents, with the Tateyama peaks close above. On the Nagano side the route crosses the Kurobe Dam, a very tall arched wall in a narrow gorge. In April and May, ploughs cut a corridor through snow that can stand many metres above the roof of the bus.

What you actually see

  • Murodo plateau - alpine ponds, steam vents and the Tateyama ridge at close range.
  • The snow corridor - walls of ploughed snow beside the road in April and May.
  • Kurobe Dam - the arched dam wall and its released water plume in summer.
  • Daikanbo - the ropeway station with the long drop down to the reservoir below.

When to go

The route opens in mid April and closes at the end of November, and nothing runs in winter. The snow corridor is at its highest from opening until early June. July and August give alpine flowers and walkable ground at Murodo, October the colour on the lower cable car sections. Book the through-ticket and timed slots ahead for holidays.

Honest expectations

This is a queue-and-transfer day: several changes, timed boarding, and at busy periods a wait at each one, with a total ticket price that surprises people. Weather at Murodo is its own thing, and cloud can reduce the famous view to a white wall. The snow corridor in Golden Week is walked shoulder to shoulder. Luggage forwarding is close to essential.

Nearby

Toyama city, the gorge railway at Unazuki and the old streets of Takayama across the range.
