The second stage of this ropeway uses double-decker cabins - the only ones in Japan - and lifts to Nishi-Hotakaguchi at 2,156 metres, where an observation deck looks straight across at the Hotaka range and Yari's spike further along the ridge. It is the least effortful way to see the Northern Alps from inside them rather than from a valley floor. In winter and early spring the walls of cleared snow around the upper station stand several metres high and are a draw in themselves. Trails from the top station run to Nishi-Hotaka Sanso hut in about ninety minutes and on to the Nishi-Hotaka summit, which is a proper mountain route with exposure and should not be attempted casually from a cable car. Below, the Okuhida onsen villages have a large number of open-air baths, several with the same mountain view.

What you actually see

  • Double-decker cabins - the only such ropeway in Japan, on the second stage.
  • A deck at 2,156 metres - facing the Hotaka wall and Yari along the ridge.
  • Snow walls - several metres high around the upper station in early spring.
  • Okuhida baths - open-air onsen in the valley below with the same view.

When to go

May to October for walking; early spring for the snow walls. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The ropeway closes in wind and cloud, which is frequent, and a clouded deck shows nothing. The trail beyond the hut is a serious mountain route with exposure. Buses from Takayama take over ninety minutes. Tickets are not cheap for a short ride.

Nearby

Kamikochi is south over the range; Takayama is west.
