Amaharashi Coast

The Tateyama range of the Northern Alps runs to three thousand metres and stands about forty kilometres across Toyama Bay from this beach, close enough and steep enough that on a clear winter morning the snow wall appears to come straight out of the water with no land between. The view is rare in a specific way: it requires a sea in front of high mountains, and the combination is uncommon anywhere. Woman Rock, a pine-topped stack a little offshore, sits in the foreground of nearly every photograph taken here. Conditions matter completely - the mountains show on perhaps a third of winter days and far fewer in summer haze, and the best chance is a cold clear morning after a front has passed. The JR Himi line runs along the shore and Amaharashi station is a minute from the sand, which makes it one of the easiest such views to reach.

Before you go

The mountains are invisible on most days, particularly in summer. There is nothing else here - it is a beach and a view. The station is small and trains are infrequent. Winter wind off the sea is severe.
