Gulf of Orosei

The gulf runs about forty kilometres along the eastern coast below the Supramonte, a limestone massif with no road along the shore, so the beaches between the cliffs, Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and others, are reached by boat from the ports at either end or by long walks in from above. Caves riddle the rock; the Grotta del Bue Marino was one of the last places in Italy where monk seals were seen, and is visited by boat. The Selvaggio Blu, a multi-day route along the cliffs, is among the most demanding trekking itineraries in Italy and requires abseiling.

When to go

June to September; boats are the practical access and are cancelled in swell. Several coves now cap daily numbers and require booking. Walk-ins are long and hot.

Good to know

Boat services stop in wind and several beaches now limit numbers with paid permits. Walking access is long, steep and waterless. The Selvaggio Blu needs a guide.
