Seen from the water or the air, the southern tip of Bataan splays into a series of headlands and coves that locals call the Five Fingers - a run of rocky inlets around the Mariveles peninsula where the mountains fall directly into the sea and small beaches hide between cliffs. Boats from Mariveles or Sisiman port work along the shore stopping at the accessible ones - places with names like Naiklec, Camaya-adjacent stretches and the sheltered bays where the water goes glass-clear over rock and coral heads - for swimming, snorkelling and lunch on the sand. Some fingers back onto private and restricted land, so the boatmen decide the day's route. The peninsula also faces the entrance to Manila Bay, so the horizon carries shipping traffic and, on clear days, the Bataan mountains behind and Corregidor's silhouette across the water. It remains a domestic weekend trip rather than an international destination, which keeps the coves quiet midweek.

What you actually see

  • The coves - small beaches between cliff headlands.
  • The clear water - snorkelling over rock and coral heads.
  • The boat route - the run along the peninsula's fingers.
  • The bay mouth - shipping lanes and distant Corregidor.

When to go

November to May for calm water and reliable boats; the coves are exposed and trips cancel in wind. Weekdays are quietest.

Honest expectations

Access is boat-only and prices are per boat - solo travellers should join a group. Some coves are closed or private; the route is the boatman's call. Facilities are none - bring everything.

Nearby

Mariveles town, the Bataan coast north toward Bagac, and the Mount Samat area lie inland and up the peninsula.
