Sangiran is a low dome of uplifted and eroded sediment north of Solo where a sequence of layers spanning roughly the last two million years is exposed at the surface, and since Gustav von Koenigswald began work here in the 1930s it has produced an extraordinary quantity of early hominin material - commonly given as around half of all known Homo erectus fossils, along with stone tools and a large vertebrate fauna. The site was inscribed by UNESCO in 1996 as one of the key locations for understanding human evolution, alongside Zhoukoudian and the East African sites. A modern museum built in 2011 presents the geology, the fossils and the excavation history in several clusters across the dome. Fossil-selling by locals has been a long-standing problem the site has worked to control.

What you actually see

  • Exposed two-million-year strata - the eroded dome that yields the fossils.
  • Homo erectus material - around half of all known specimens came from here.
  • A modern museum - geology, fossils and excavation history across several clusters.
  • A UNESCO evolution site - inscribed with the world's key hominin localities.

When to go

May to September. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The famous specimens themselves are largely elsewhere; the museum shows casts and context. The clusters are spread apart and need a vehicle. Do not buy fossils offered locally.

Nearby

Solo is south; Prambanan and Yogyakarta are further south-west.
