Umbul Ponggok

Umbul Ponggok is a natural spring pool in Ponggok village, Klaten - clear cold water welling up through a sandy floor into a pool of about seventy by forty metres, historically used for bathing and irrigation. In 2014 the village enterprise reworked it as an attraction on a specific premise: the water is clear enough to photograph through, so visitors snorkel with rented masks over a floor furnished with motorbikes, sofas, bicycles and props, and are photographed underwater by attendants with housed cameras. It became a substantial income source, and Ponggok is now cited across Indonesia as the model case of a village enterprise funding local services from tourism revenue. It is crowded, artificial and works exactly as intended.

Honest expectations

It is entirely staged - the props are the point, not the nature. Weekends are extremely crowded and the water gets churned. The spring is genuinely cold. Photo packages are charged separately.
