Hanle

Hanle sits at about 4,500 metres in the Changthang, and the Indian Astronomical Observatory was built on a ridge above it in 2001 because the site combines high altitude, extremely dry air, minimal cloud and almost no artificial light. In 2022 the surrounding area was designated the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, India's first, with lighting restrictions agreed with the villages, shielded fittings installed and residents trained as astronomy guides operating telescopes for visitors. A seventeenth-century monastery stands on a hill above the village, and Changpa herders graze the plateau around it.

History

Hanle is named in the settlement document of the kingdom of Maryul around 930 AD as one of its frontiers. King Sengge Namgyal, who reigned from 1616 to 1642, built the Hanle monastery together with the Drukpa teacher Tagtsang Repa and died here in 1642; the Indian Astronomical Observatory now stands above the village (Wikipedia, Hanle, Ladakh).

When to go

June to September for accessible roads; the sky is clearest around the new moon, which is the date to plan around. Winter is extremely cold with difficult access but exceptionally clear.

Practical notes

An Inner Line Permit is required and the drive from Leh takes most of a day. At 4,500 metres altitude sickness is a real risk. Lighting rules apply to visitors: white torches and car headlights are restricted at night. Accommodation is village homestays.
