Svortuloft Lighthouse

Svortuloft, the black lofts, is a stretch of dark sea cliff on the outermost point of Snaefellsnes, and the small orange lighthouse on it - Skalasnagaviti - is the marker most people photograph, its colour deliberate against black rock and grey sea. The cliffs below hold nesting fulmars and kittiwakes in summer, and a viewing platform juts out over the drop. The coast here takes the full Atlantic and the sea rarely looks calm. The track in is several kilometres of rough gravel across lava with potholes and loose sections, which keeps numbers down and accounts for most of the time a visit takes.

When to go

June to September; the track is worse and the point brutal outside that. Two hours.

Good to know

Small hire cars struggle on the track and some rental agreements exclude it. Cliff edges are unfenced apart from the platform. Wind here is severe and there is no shelter. No facilities.
