Cape Enrage

A light has marked Cape Enrage since the first half of the nineteenth century, on a cliff above a reef where the tide runs hard enough to give the cape its name. By 1993 it was automated and derelict and slated for demolition. Dennison Tate, a Moncton teacher, brought a group of high school students out to repair it as a project; they raised money, restored the buildings and ran the site as a student-operated business for years, an arrangement that became well known in the province. It is now run by a non-profit with a restaurant, a zipline and rappelling down the cliff, and the fossil-bearing beach below is walkable at low tide.

When to go

May to September; the site closes for winter. Beach access depends entirely on the tide and the window is short given the Fundy range. Fog is common.

Things to know

Closed for most of the year. Beach access is tide-limited and getting caught is dangerous with these tides. The site is small and the visit short without the activities.
