The Hungarian Open Air Museum

The Skanzen, as everyone calls it, fills a valley three kilometres outside Szentendre and holds several hundred buildings taken down in their original villages and rebuilt here: houses, barns, a watermill, wooden churches, a fire station, a schoolroom, a village shop and a row of craftsmen's workshops. They are grouped into regional units, each laid out as a fragment of a real settlement with its own street pattern, fencing and planting, so the Upper Tisza houses look and smell different from the Transdanubian ones. Interiors are furnished to a stated year, livestock is kept, and on event days staff bake, weave and work the forge. A narrow-gauge train loops the site, which matters because the distances between units are genuinely long.

• The furnished interiors - rooms fitted out to a specific year rather than generically.
• The wooden churches - relocated timber church buildings with painted interiors.
• The narrow-gauge train - the circuit line that makes the site walkable in a day.

When to go

The museum closes for the winter and reopens in spring; check dates before travelling. Event days, with craft demonstrations, animals and cooking, are far better than ordinary days when many houses are simply locked. May, June and September avoid both the heat and the school-holiday crowds. Allow a full day and start early.

Honest expectations

It is very large and doing it on foot in July is punishing, with long shadeless stretches between units. Outside event days a good number of houses are closed and the place can feel static and empty. English labelling is patchy and the audio guide does not cover everything. The entrance is a bus ride from Szentendre station and the last connections back run early.
