The Royal Palace of Visegrad

Below the ridge and its citadel, on the flat ground by the river, stood the residence of the Hungarian court through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Under King Matthias it was rebuilt with Italian craftsmen into one of the earliest Renaissance palaces north of the Alps, then abandoned and gradually buried by soil washing off the hillside above, so completely that its exact location was disputed until excavation began in 1934. What has been uncovered and partly rebuilt is a set of terraced courtyards climbing the slope, with the Hercules fountain, a reconstructed red marble lion fountain and vaulted cellars beneath. Costumed craft demonstrations and tournaments run through the summer months.

When to go

April to October. Summer weekends bring events, craft stalls and archery for children, which make the site livelier but also loud and busy. Closed on Mondays. Morning is calmer, and it pairs naturally with a walk or taxi up to the citadel afterwards rather than the other way round.

Honest expectations

A large share of what stands is modern reconstruction built over original footings, and the boundary between the two is not always signposted. The uncovered area is a fraction of the original palace and gives limited sense of a working court. It is ticketed separately from the citadel above, so seeing both costs twice. The summer events are pitched squarely at families. Most people remember the view from the citadel rather than this.
