Zaanse Schans is a living open-air village on the river Zaan, a collection of working windmills, green-painted wooden houses, barns and workshops gathered to preserve a picture of the old Dutch countryside. Its mills still grind pigments, spices and oil, and visitors can watch clogs being carved and cheese being made, an easy and photogenic trip from Amsterdam.
