Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is a living open-air village on the river Zaan, a collection of working windmills, green-painted wooden houses, barns and workshops gathered to preserve a picture of the old Dutch countryside. Its mills still grind pigments, spices and oil, and visitors can watch clogs being carved and cheese being made, an easy and photogenic trip from Amsterdam.

Background

Between 1961 and 1974 old buildings from across the Zaanstreek were moved here on lowboy trailers, though two of the windmills stand where they were first built. The mills date from after 1574 and include De Kat, De Zoeker, Het Jonge Schaap, De Gekroonde Poelenburg and De Huisman. The ensemble is protected as a village scene for its architectural, historical and landscape value. The name joins the river Zaan with schans, the Dutch word for a sconce. The Zaans Museum, founded in 1994, lies just south of the neighbourhood, and about 80% of the indoor locations are free to enter. Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station is 18 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, and visitors numbered 2.6 million in 2024.

When to go

Spring to autumn for the best weather and open mills; it is very close to Amsterdam and easy to combine with the city. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the heaviest crowds and coach tours.

It is close to Amsterdam and very popular, so it gets crowded with coach tours by midday; go early. It is somewhat curated and touristy, a preserved showcase rather than a real working village, but it is genuinely picturesque and free to wander.
