Bel Air Beach

Guinea's coast rarely makes the brochures, which suits Bel Air fine: north of Conakry near Boffa, the shore runs golden and palm-backed for kilometres, an old resort era's traces softening into a beach that now belongs to fishing pirogues, weekend families from the capital and the occasional overlander who heard the rumour. The swimming is warm and open, grilled fish and attieke appear wherever cars gather, and the estuaries either side - the Rio Pongo's mangrove country especially - add pirogue trips among islands and birdlife to the sunbathing. It is West Atlantic beach life at its unhurried source.

When to go

November to April is the dry season's bright window; weekends bring Conakry's picnic energy, weekdays near-solitude. The rains transform the coast to dramatic grey-green and test the road.

Things to know

Facilities are sparse - bring water, shade and supplies, and expect simple guesthouses at best; the faded-resort backdrop is part of the scene. Currents deserve respect where locals say so. The Conakry road is slow and lively - treat the drive as part of the excursion.
