Getting thereAbove Goyave on the eastern side of Basse-Terre; road then a river walk
EntryFree

The Cascade Moreau lies above Goyave on the eastern side of Basse-Terre, reached by following the river up from the road end, wading and scrambling over rocks for the better part of an hour to reach the main fall and the pool below it. Several smaller pools along the way are used for swimming. It is a river walk rather than a path, so shoes that can get wet are the requirement.

What you actually see

  • The main fall - the waterfall at the head of the river walk.
  • The river route - the walk up the bed itself, wading and scrambling.
  • The pools - the smaller basins along the way used for swimming.
  • The forest - the growth closing over the river valley.

When to go

December to April is the driest and safest. The river must be low; after rain the route is impassable and dangerous. Weekends are busiest.

Honest expectations

This is a river walk with wading and scrambling, not a path, and it is dangerous when the water is up. Flash floods on Guadeloupean rivers have killed people. There is no marking or supervision.

Nearby

Goyave is below, and Grand Etang is southwest.
