Sofaia
A hillside site in northern Basse-Terre with a sulphur shower and a view over the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin.

Sofaïa sits on the slope above Sainte-Rose in the north of Basse-Terre, where a sulphur spring has been piped into an open shower that people stand under for its supposed effect on the skin, in a clearing at the edge of the forest. The view from the site runs down over the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin, the lagoon and mangrove system on the northern coast, with the islets scattered across it. A forest trail starts here.

When to go
December to April is the driest and clearest for the view. Weekends bring local visitors. Cloud closes the view often.

The shower is a pipe and a concrete slab, not a spa. Claims about the water's effect are traditional belief. Facilities are minimal.
