La Perle lies between Deshaies and Pointe Noire, a beach of golden sand backed by rock outcrops and thick vegetation with almost nothing built on it, which makes it wilder than Grande Anse a few kilometres north. The sea here is more exposed and a heavy shore break runs on most days, so it is used by surfers and bodyboarders more than by swimmers. Rocks at either end make good snorkelling when the water is calm.

- The vegetation - thick coastal growth right down to the sand.
When to go
December to April is the driest. Surf is biggest in the winter months. Calm days for snorkelling are unpredictable.
Honest expectations
The shore break and rip currents are genuinely dangerous and there are no lifeguards. Facilities are limited to a roadside pull-in. Rocks make entry and exit awkward in swell.
