Valaste Waterfall

Valaste is the tallest waterfall in Estonia, dropping roughly thirty metres over the edge of the Baltic Klint - the limestone escarpment that runs along the north coast. It is also the country's most-photographed cross-section of geology: the cliff face behind the water shows the layers stacked up like a diagram, which is why it is a protected natural monument rather than only a scenic stop.

What you actually see

• The fall - a thin ribbon dropping clear off the top of the cliff into a rubble-strewn cove, with the Gulf of Finland behind it.
• The platform - a viewpoint at the top of the klint that gives the drop and the coastline in one frame.
• The steps - a way down towards the shore, in condition that varies year to year as the cliff erodes.
• The rock stripe - Ordovician and Cambrian layers laid out one above the other, which is the reason geologists come here.

When to go

March to April is snowmelt and the strongest flow of the year. January to February can freeze the fall into a hanging column of ice, which is when it looks its best. In summer the flow can drop to a trickle in a dry spell: green and pleasant, but the waterfall is barely there.

Honest expectations

The water does not come from a natural river. It arrives through a land-drainage ditch dug in the early nineteenth century, which is why the flow swings so hard with the season and why the fall exists in this exact spot at all. That does not make the cliff less real, but it explains the summer disappointment people report.

The klint edge is actively eroding and sections of the stairs and platform have been closed and rebuilt more than once. Check the current state before planning the walk down to the shore.

The Ontika klint stretch runs west along the coast with several other viewpoints. Toila-Oru park and the mining museum at Kohtla-Nõmme are both within half an hour.
