Hosios Loukas Monastery

Two churches share a walled terrace on a slope of Mount Helicon, ringed by olive and almond trees. The smaller Theotokos church went up in the tenth century; the larger Katholikon beside it dates from the early eleventh and carries gold-ground mosaics across its narthex and squinches, a Crucifixion, a Washing of the Feet, ranks of saints looking out of the half-dark. Coloured marble sheets the lower walls, the floor is laid in patterned stone, and a crypt underneath holds frescoes and the tomb of the hermit Luke, whose reputation drew the wealthy patrons who paid for all of it. A small community of monks still lives on site.

What you actually see

• The Katholikon mosaics - gold-ground figures across the narthex, squinches and side vaults.
• The crypt - a low frescoed burial chamber under the main church, cool even in August.
• The Theotokos church - the older, smaller building, with carved marble and decorative brickwork outside.
• The terrace - olive slopes falling away below the monastery walls toward the plain.

When to go

Spring and autumn suit it best; the stone terrace bakes in July and August with almost no shade. Coaches running the Athens to Delphi circuit tend to arrive late morning, so the first hour after opening is the quiet one. Mosaics live on light, and a bright day lifts the gold far more than an overcast one. Modest dress is expected.

Honest expectations

The dome mosaic is gone, replaced by painting after an earthquake, so the ensemble is incomplete. Interiors are dim and photographs without flash rarely do them justice. It is a short visit and hard to justify as a day trip on its own from Athens, working far better folded into a Delphi run. Hours shorten off-season and the crypt is sometimes shut.
