Cretaquarium

Cretaquarium sits at Gournes on the coast east of Heraklion and is run as part of a marine research institute rather than as a pure attraction, which shows in the way it is put together. The focus is the Mediterranean: sandbanks, seagrass meadows, rocky reefs and open water, each with the species that actually live there, including sharks, groupers, moray eels and jellyfish. The tanks are arranged as a single route with an audio guide, and the largest holds a mixed open-water community that people tend to sit in front of for a while. It is entirely indoors and air conditioned, which makes it one of the few reliable options on Crete during a heatwave or a rare wet day.

What you actually see

• The jellyfish displays - lit tanks showing species found in the same sea outside.

When to go

Open year round, which is the main argument for it. Coach groups arrive mid-morning, so the first hour after opening or the last two before closing are calmer. It works well as a wet-weather or heatwave fallback rather than a fixed plan. Check seasonal closing times, which are earlier in winter than the summer schedule.

Honest expectations

It is mid-sized by northern European standards and you can walk it in ninety minutes, so family ticket prices feel steep to some. Several tanks are deliberately dim, which makes label reading awkward and photographs poor. It gets loud when two coach groups overlap. The setting, on a stretch of developed coast, is not scenic.
