The Kattegat Centre stands beside the beach at Grenaa and is best known for its sharks. The ocean tank holds large species and can be entered by certified divers, or by beginners in a cage, which is unusual for a Danish aquarium. Beyond it the displays work outwards from the cold water of the Kattegat to tropical reefs, with a shallow pool where rays can be touched, an octopus tank and a section on what lives under the Danish coast. Seals are kept in an outdoor pool with feeding and training sessions through the day, and the sand of Grenaa beach begins a few steps from the door.
What you actually see
- The ocean tank - large sharks circling a deep tank, with diving available on booking.
- The ray pool - shallow open water where rays can be touched.
- The seal pool - outdoor seals with scheduled feeding and training sessions.
- The tropical reef - warm-water tanks set against the local cold-water displays.
When to go
Open all year; wet days in July are the busiest hours in the calendar here. Feeding and diver shows are the fixed points of the day and are worth timing a visit around. Shark dives must be booked ahead and carry age and certification rules. Grenaa beach next door makes the natural summer pairing.
Honest expectations
It is not large, and two hours is usually enough, which makes the entry price sting. Displays outside the shark tank are ordinary and some show their age. School groups arrive in waves during term time. The shark dive costs a great deal on top of the ticket and sells out well ahead in summer.
Nearby
Grenaa's long beach and harbour are next door; Mols Bjerge and Ebeltoft are half an hour west.
