Gammel Estrup is a moated manor of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries on Djursland, held by the same family for four hundred years and sold in 1926, after which it became a museum. It is presented as the national museum of Danish manor house culture, with interiors furnished across several centuries, from a Renaissance hall through baroque and rococo rooms to nineteenth-century family life, along with kitchens, servants' quarters and a chapel, so the working half of the house is shown as well as the display half. In the outbuildings and grounds is the Danish agricultural museum, covering farming history with machinery, tools and livestock, and a formal baroque garden has been restored behind the house.

What you actually see

  • Interiors across four centuries - Renaissance hall to nineteenth-century rooms.
  • Kitchens and servants' quarters - the working half of the house shown.
  • The agricultural museum - machinery and farming history in the outbuildings.
  • A restored baroque garden - formal planting behind the moated house.

When to go

April to October for full opening; winter hours are reduced. Half a day for both museums. Danish school holidays bring family programmes. The garden is at its best in early summer.

Honest expectations

Two museums on one ticket means a long visit and some fatigue. The agricultural section is large and technical. Winter opening is limited. Public transport to Auning is infrequent. Some rooms are viewed from the doorway.

Nearby

Rosenholm Castle is south; Randers and its rainforest are west.
