Afytos

Afytos stands on a shelf of sandstone about forty metres above the sea on the eastern side of the Kassandra peninsula, and it is the one village in Halkidiki with a genuinely preserved traditional core: stone houses of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with wooden balconies, carved lintels and courtyards, protected since the 1970s from the concrete that took over much of the coast. Paved lanes lead to a square with plane trees and the church of Agios Dimitrios, and terraces along the cliff edge give a long view over the gulf to Sithonia and, in clear weather, Athos. Below, a path descends to the beach and to springs that emerge at the shoreline. The village fills with visitors in the evening, when the cafes on the edge take the sunset.

History

Ancient Aphytis was an important town of Pallene whose fleet took part in the Persian Wars; it declined and is not mentioned again until the 14th century. In the Greek War of Independence many revolutionaries came from the village, among them Triantafyllos Garoufallou, Georgios Panagiotou and Anastassios Kiriazis (Wikipedia, Afytos).

When to go

Late spring and September for pleasant walking and open cafes without August crowds. Evenings are the village's best hour year-round; winter is quiet but several tavernas stay open.

Things to know

The village is small and can be walked in an hour, so it works as an evening stop rather than a destination. In August the lanes and cafes are crowded and parking is difficult. The beach below is ordinary by Halkidiki standards.
