The Wadden Sea

Twice a day the North Sea pulls back from the German coast and hands over the seabed. What is left is the Watt, a flat brown expanse of silt and sand cut by drainage channels and printed with lugworm casts and the tracks of wading birds. Walking on it barefoot behind a guide is the normal way to meet the place, and the guide is not decoration: the tide comes back faster than people expect and the channels fill first. Two national parks protect the German share, and the whole coast is inscribed as World Heritage for the sheer biological output of the flats, which feed millions of migrating birds every spring and autumn.

What you actually see

• The mudflat walk - barefoot across the seabed at low tide, behind a guide who reads the channels.
• The Halligen - low, undyked marsh islets that flood over in winter storms.
• Seal sandbanks - harbour and grey seals hauled out, watched from boats at a distance.
• The bird passage - spring and autumn flocks of waders refuelling on the flats.

When to go

Guided walks run from spring to early autumn and are set by the tide rather than the clock, so the start time shifts by roughly an hour each day. May and September pair mild weather with the largest bird numbers. Winter closes most walks and much of the island infrastructure, but leaves the storm tides.

Honest expectations

It is mud, not scenery: flat, brown and grey under most skies, and anyone expecting drama tends to leave disappointed. The wind is constant and there is no shelter anywhere on the flats. Walks run two to three hours with no way to cut them short, the silt is cold and shells cut bare feet. Going out alone is genuinely dangerous.
