Strasbourg Grande Ile

Strasbourg's historic heart sits on an island in the River Ill, and the Grande Ile packs a millennium of Franco-German conversation into a walkable knot of lanes: the cathedral of Notre-Dame rises in lace-carved rose sandstone, for centuries among the tallest structures in the world, its astronomical clock performing a mechanical parade each midday; around it spread merchant squares, winstub wine taverns, and the postcard quarter of Petite France, where half-timbered tanners' houses lean over swan-patrolled canals and lock bridges. UNESCO listed the whole island, and in December it becomes the stage of Christkindelsmarik, the Christmas market that has run since 1570 and perfumes the entire city with mulled wine and spice.

When to go

Lovely year round, with two peaks: December's Christmas market transforms the city into its most famous self and books out hotels far ahead, while late spring and September offer canal-side idling at half the density. Summer brings boat traffic and terrace life to every quay.

Before you go

Petite France is as photogenic as promised and correspondingly busy from mid-morning - the quarter is small, so a dawn walk repays the alarm clock. December is magical, cold and genuinely crowded; visitors who dislike crowds should love Strasbourg in any other month instead. Alsatian food is hearty winter engineering - pace yourself, and note many restaurants close Sunday and Monday.
