Musee Rodin

Rodin rented rooms in the Hotel Biron from 1908, an eighteenth-century mansion then let out cheaply to artists, and in 1916 he donated his entire collection, archive and work to the French state on the condition that the house become a museum of it. The garden is the point: The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell stand outdoors among clipped hedges and rose beds across three hectares, so the sculpture is seen in daylight and from all sides. Inside are The Kiss, studies, plasters and Rodin's own collection, including works by Van Gogh and Monet, alongside a room of Camille Claudel.

What to look for

• The garden sculptures - The Thinker, Burghers of Calais and Gates of Hell outdoors.
• The Kiss - the marble in the house galleries.
• The Claudel room - work by Camille Claudel, sculptor and Rodin's collaborator.
• Rodin's own collection - paintings he owned, including Van Gogh.

When to go

April to October for the garden and roses, which is when the museum is at its best; it closes on Mondays. A cheaper garden-only ticket exists and is enough for many visitors.

Things to know

The garden ticket does not include the house. Queues form in summer. The mansion interior is smaller than the collection's fame suggests.
